One of the most common challenges I hear from organizations is:

“How do we bridge the generational gap in our workplace?”

You’ve got employees who have been doing the job for 20 or 30 years working alongside people who have been in the workforce for 20 or 30 months.

These groups think differently.

They communicate differently.

They approach work differently.

And sometimes leaders start asking which generation needs to change.

But I believe we’re asking the wrong question.

Your multigenerational workforce isn’t a challenge you need to solve. It’s an advantage you need to activate.

Think about what your more experienced team members bring to the table.

Experience. Results. Lessons learned.

They’ve seen what works and what doesn’t. They’ve experienced the setbacks, the mistakes, and the lessons that only come from putting in the time.

They understand that greatness doesn’t happen overnight.

Now think about what the younger generation brings.

Energy. Creativity. New perspectives.

And sometimes their greatest advantage is that they don’t know what they don’t know.

They haven’t been around long enough to learn all the reasons something supposedly can’t be done.

So, the answer?

You need both.

You need the experience and the energy.

You need the wisdom and the creativity.

You need people who know what works and people willing to ask why it has to work that way.

The question isn’t which generation should win.

The question is: How do we get them working together?

Over the years, I’ve helped organizations across different industries navigate this very challenge. And one thing I’ve learned is that bridging the generational gap doesn’t happen by accident.

It requires an intentional strategy to activate your generational advantage.

That’s why I use a simple framework called CPR. It helps leaders transfer knowledge, develop talent, and create opportunities for different generations to bring out the best in one another.

Because the goal isn’t simply to get different generations working alongside each other.

It’s to get them growing, learning, and winning together.

YOUR PURSUIT OF GREATNESS

C

COACHING

Transfer the knowledge.

P

PRACTICE

Give people real repetitions.

P

RESPONSIBILITY

Give people ownership.

1 | COACHING

Knowledge doesn’t transfer through proximity.

Just because someone younger works beside an experienced leader doesn’t mean they’re automatically learning from them.

You have to coach them.

Teach them why you do what you do.

Share the mistakes.

Share the lessons you’ve learned.

Explain the lessons it took you years to learn.

Don’t just send an email and tell someone to figure it out.

Invest in them.

2 | PRACTICE

Coaching without practice is just information.

Give people opportunities to apply what you’ve taught them.

Let them share in the meeting.

Make the presentation.

Handle the customer.

Solve the problem.

They’re going to make mistakes.

Good!

That’s what practice is for.

You can’t develop someone while protecting them from every opportunity to learn.

Real development requires real repetitions.

3 | RESPONSIBILITY

This may be the hardest one.

At some point, you have to give responsibility away.

For experienced leaders, that can be uncomfortable because sometimes we confuse giving away responsibility with giving up control.

We think that if we give something away, we’re losing our value, influence, or position.

But developing another person doesn’t diminish your value.

It multiplies your impact.

Giving someone else responsibility allows them to grow while freeing you to put your experience, energy, and attention toward the things that require your leadership most.

That’s not losing control.

That’s leadership development.

Leaders, stop looking at the generations inside your organization and asking which one is better.

Your responsibility is to bring their strengths together.

Coach them.

Let them practice.

Give them responsibility.

Your team doesn’t need another debate about generations.

Your team needs CPR.
