Lately, I’ve had a lot of breakthrough conversations with entrepreneurs around the idea of selling.
Some are coaches trying to sell their services. Some are speakers looking to land gigs with businesses and organizations. Others are transitioning careers and preparing for interviews that could change their lives.
And through all these conversations, I’ve noticed one common thread: CONFIDENCE.
Many people downplay their value. They question whether their message is good enough, their skills are strong enough, or if they even deserve the opportunity. Some hold back entirely, never even trying because they assume they’re not the right fit.
If that sounds familiar, let me share a story with you…
BABE RUTH AND THE BUTTER ⚾
Legendary baseball player Babe Ruth walks into a diner for a breakfast meeting with some businessmen.
As he steps inside, the host greets him: “Same booth as always, Mr. Ruth?”
Without breaking conversation with his business friends, Babe Ruth nods and takes his seat. A waiter quickly arrives, drops off some bread and butter, and says, “Take your time, gentlemen. I’ll be back to take your order.”
A few minutes later, Babe Ruth waves him over. Expecting them to be ready to order, the waiter pulls out his notepad.
Instead, Babe Ruth says, “We haven’t looked at the menu yet, but we’d like another stick of butter.”
The waiter glances at the empty dish and responds, “Mr. Ruth, you know our rule here—one bread, one butter per table.”
Babe Ruth, ever the charismatic figure, grins and replies, “I know the rule… but come on, I’m Babe Ruth.”
The waiter, unfazed, smiles and responds: “I know who you are, Mr. Ruth… but I’m the man with the butter.”
What’s the Lesson?
Confidence goes both ways.
Babe Ruth was a legend, but that waiter? They knew their role, and they owned it.
The next time you feel intimidated by a potential client, an audience, or an interviewer, remember this:
They might be the “Babe Ruth” in their field… but you’re the one with the butter.
YOUR PURSUIT OF GREATNESS
- Own Your Value
Don’t downplay what you bring to the table. Whether you’re selling a service, pitching yourself for a job, or stepping into a big opportunity, believe in your skills, your message, and your worth. Confidence is contagious—when you believe in yourself, others will too. - Don’t Be Intimidated by Big Names
Just because someone has a big title, reputation, or success doesn’t mean they hold all the power. You have something they need—your expertise, perspective, or talent. No matter who’s on the other side of the table, remember: you’re the one with the butter. - Stand Your Ground with Confidence
Like the waiter in the story, sometimes confidence isn’t about being the loudest—it’s about standing firm in who you are. Trust yourself, communicate clearly, and never shrink yourself in the presence of others. Someone else’s status doesn’t determine your value—it’s defined by what you bring to the game.
So the next time you walk into a room, step up to an opportunity, or pitch your value—remember, you’re the one with the butter. Own it, believe it, and go make it happen!
