Recently, I’ve been playing “Follow the Leader” with my oldest daughter and it has been great. We’re hopping across imaginary
rocks, avoiding the lava beneath. It’s all fun and games and then I decide to switch roles, making her the leader. What happened next not only made for a memorable game but also taught me some unexpected leadership lessons.
THE SWITCHEROO MOMENT:
What happened next not only made for a memorable game but also taught me some unexpected leadership lessons.
LEADERSHIP LESSONS UNVEILED:
Lesson 1: Your Team Is Always Watching
Just like my daughter observed and emulated my moves as a follower, your team is always watching you. Leading by example is a
powerful way to influence others. While you might think they are only listening to your words, they are also watching your moves. Your team is always taking notes!
Lesson 2: Your Team Has New Ideas
When I switched roles from leader to follower, I discovered new moves and ways of playing the game. My daughter opened up my
eyes to a new way of playing the game. The same goes for your team. When you allow someone to play the leader and share their perspectives and suggestions, it brings diversity to the team that may not have been there before. You will uncover innovative approaches
that enhance your leadership style, team dynamic, and overall bottom line.
Lesson 3: Your Team Is Waiting To Be Empowered
It took a bit of encouragement, but once my daughter took the lead, she soared. The same applies to your team members. Empower
them to step up and take charge. A little encouragement can go a long way in unlocking their leadership potential. As leaders, we often grapple with finding the right balance of power. Give too much, and there’s a fear of chaos; give too little, and your team
might seek autonomy elsewhere. “Follow the Leader” offers a playful way to strike that balance
YOUR OWN PURSUIT OF GREATNESS
Consider implementing your own version of “Follow the Leader” within your team or organization. Where can you let someone else take the lead? Whether it’s a meeting, a pitch, a project, or even a day in the top spot, embrace the opportunity. Not only will you learn about their leadership style, but you’ll also see the impact of your teachings. Remember, leadership is a dynamic dance, and sometimes, letting others lead can create a harmonious rhythm within your team.
